Why Your Two Way Radios Aren’t Working

Radio Troubleshooting

It’s no secret that the cost of a two way radio system can be an investment. However, in order to achieve the most efficient communication for your team, this is often the most economical move. Not only do these radios provide instant communication, but they are also pretty much always purchased under warranty when you buy from an authorized dealer.

Having issues with your handhelds? Call up your dealer and have them walk you through some troubleshooting questions. If there is a deficiency due to the manufacturing of the product, a new one is typically sent out for free.

It is important to first try and troubleshoot your two way radios yourself before having to send them in for a potentially unnecessary repair.

If your two way radios aren’t working as expected, here are a few reasons why this may be:

1.) You did not charge your radio properly.

-A lot of times, people are concerned that their radios have gone bad due to the fact that it is losing power quickly, or that they just will not turn on. In this case, you may have simply incorrectly connected the radio to your charger. Matt from Two Way Direct walks us through a troubleshoot in this video:

2.)You are not on the correct channel.

-Make sure that you know which channel your team is on, so that you can turn the channel knob on your radio to reach them. If no signal is going out, or if all you hear is static, check your channel to assure that you are correctly connected.

3.)You did not plug in the two way radio accessory properly.

-In order to use an accessory with your handheld(s), you must plug it in while the radio is in the off position. This is one of the most common mistakes when it comes to people who are unable to utilize radio earpieces and microphones with their product.

4.)You are out of range.

-Purchase a radio that works for your topography and understand the range in which it will be used. Many people waste money by being lazy about finding exactly what they need. Here is a short lesson on a few crucial concepts before you make your purchase. If this still does not make sense, be sure to call your dealer and ask a representative to find what you need within your budget.

When communicating, make sure that you are aware of the etiquette that comes along with utilizing these two way radios. Don’t interrupt; speak clearly and shorten your messages. Once you get this down, you’ll be a pro!
